Training Workshops

Phase I Introductory Workshop: Logistics, Field Chemistry and Grab Sampling
This introductory training workshop provides participants with an understanding of how the Watershed Watch organization functions and what is involved in participating as a sampler. Specific instruction is provided on assessing certain field chemistry characteristics of water, as well as how to properly collect a “grab sample” for analysis at a certified laboratory.

The 2022 FRWW Phase 1 Training Workshop is on Thursday, May 5, 5-7pm at Murray State University - Collins Industry & Technology Center, room 234 in Murray, KY.

This workshop is free, but please register in advance by emailing rlamb@murraystate.edu or by calling (270) 832-2557. Masks are required and social distancing protocols will be followed.

Phase 2 Workshop: Habitat & Bio-Assessment

This optional training enables volunteers to assess their stream's ability to support aquatic life through adequate habitat in the stream corridor, and to collect and identify macroinvertebrates to further understand the stream’s quality.

The 2022 FRWW Phase 2 Training Workshop is on Saturday, May 7, 9-11am at Bee Creek Soccer Complex in Murray, KY.

This workshop is free, but please register in advance by emailing rlamb@murraystate.edu or by calling (270) 832-2557. Masks are required and social distancing protocols will be followed.

Virtual Training

Click here for training materials for introductory sampling. At the conclusion of the 45-minute introductory training video, you can complete the quiz linked in the details below the video. The completion of this quiz will then prompt our Volunteer Coordinator to contact you about arranging a practice session and the delivery of your sampling supplies.

Sampling Events

FRWW organizes annual sampling events in May, July, and September during which our volunteers assess field chemistry and collect water samples for E. coli analysis. During the fall sampling event, some samplers are given the opportunity to collect samples for nutrient and/or metals analysis.

2022 Sampling Dates:

  • May 19-21

  • July 14-16

  • September 15-17

Annual Conference

FRWW organizes an Annual Conference to review the year's sampling results, recertify existing samplers via a short video, and provide a time for our samplers to interact and network with one another. This year, we will also review how to use the online data portal and introduce a new habitat form. Food will be provided outdoors, and then we will move inside (masks required).

If you are new to FRWW or might be interested in joining, you are more than welcome to attend and see what we're all about! We are always looking for new volunteers.

Our last conference was held on Thursday, October 21, 2021 at Hancock Biological Station, 561 Emma Drive, Murray, KY.

Stay tuned for more information about the next one!
